On Tuesday, May 19, voters in Dougherty County will have the opportunity to make an important decision that could provide meaningful property tax relief while continuing to support the services our community depends on every day. The proposed Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) is designed to ease the burden of rising property taxes through a temporary 1% sales tax that helps fund essential community services.
The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce is encouraging community members to support FLOST because it offers a balanced, community-focused solution that benefits both residents and local governments.
FLOST is a temporary, five-year, 1% sales tax that would replace a portion of property taxes currently paid by residents and businesses. Rather than relying solely on property owners to fund essential services, FLOST allows everyone who shops in Dougherty County — including visitors and non-residents — to contribute. In fact, approximately 30% of the projected revenue is expected to come from travelers and people who live outside the community.
One of the biggest benefits of FLOST is the projected reduction in county and city property tax rates by approximately 30%. For homeowners and businesses alike, this could provide significant financial relief at a time when many are feeling the pressure of increasing costs.
By shifting part of the funding responsibility to a small sales tax, FLOST creates a more shared approach to supporting local services and infrastructure.
While FLOST focuses on tax relief, it also ensures that critical services remain funded. Revenue generated through the tax would continue supporting public safety, roads, courts, parks, and other important services that help keep Dougherty County strong and growing.
This means residents can benefit from lower property taxes without sacrificing the quality of services that impact daily life.
Another key aspect of FLOST is accountability. Independent audits would ensure that all funds are used specifically for property tax relief purposes. Additionally, the tax is not permanent — voters must reapprove it every five years, giving the community continued control over the program.
The May 19 election gives residents the opportunity to help shape the future of Dougherty County. Whether you are a homeowner, business owner, or community member, your vote matters.
FLOST represents an effort to reduce the strain of property taxes while maintaining the services that make our community a great place to live, work, and do business. Be sure to make your voice heard on Election Day — Tuesday, May 19.
